From the 13th to the 28th of January, 2024.
“Working with clay allowed me to say things I didn’t know how to express in any other way” Reinata Sadimba.
Glenda Cinquegrana Art Consulting is proud to present an OVR dedicated to two African women artists Esther Mahlangu (South Africa) and Reinata Sadimba (Mozambique), The OVR focuses on the comparison of two cases of feminine social emancipation conveyed through art.
Born in Middleburg (South Africa) in 1935, Esther Mahlangu‘s art practice is firmly rooted in the centuries-old traditional Ndebele culture, handed down through the family and passed on only by women, including painting, clothing, and beading. Being firmly rooted in the tribal language considered in the mural medium, her contemporary painting is a way of conveying new meanings to those ancient traditions, as well as an ode to the importance of the transmissive role of women in traditional and contemporary societies.
Born in 1945 in the largest town of the Mueda Plateau (Mozambique), Reinata Sadimba learned to practice the Makonde tradition related to clay figures production. Within the Makonde, sculpting is an activity generally reserved for men, which represented an obstacle for Reinata at the beginning of her career, when she decided to take over this traditional practice. Then, she decides to focus as a sculptural subject on Mother Earth as a key allegorical figure, rooting in the matrilineal heritage.
Sadimba has received numerous awards and has held exhibitions in several countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark, Italy, South Africa and Tanzania.
